Alliances & Joint Ventures Industry & Economy - Coal NTPC plans joint venture with Coal India Our Bureau
Kolkata , Feb. 27 National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) proposes to set up a 50:50 joint venture coal company with Coal India Ltd (CIL), to develop new coal mines for exclusively meeting the corporation's additional coal requirement at its thermal power projects in the eastern region. To begin with, two virgin blocks such as Brahmani and Chichro Patrimal would be developed. Disclosing this to newspersons, the Union Power Minister, Mr Sushilkumar Shinde, said that his Ministry had allowed NTPC to take up a 4,000 MW capacity greenfield mega thermal power project at Lara in Chhattisgarh. In fact, the corporation's generation capacity in the eastern region would be augmented in order to ensure the increased power supply by NTPC from this region to other power deficit States. Mr Shinde on Sunday laid the foundation stone of a 500 MW capacity unit of NTPC's Farakka Supper Thermal Power Station. This came under Stage-III phase of the station, which is currently operating with three 220 MW capacity units and two units each with a 500 MW capacity. He said that Farakka's expansion programme had been sanctioned following assurance of adequate of coal and water by respective authorities.
