Vimala Vasan

Abu Dhabi , Feb. 27

The Pakistan Prime Minister, Mr Shaukat Aziz, has approved a proposal to start negotiations with Dubai Ports World (DP World) as potential operator of Gwadar port in the Pakistani province of Baluchistan.

Presiding over a high-level meeting in Islamabad, Mr Aziz was informed that the Gwadar port would be ready by mid-2006, according to an Emirates News Agency (WAM) report quoting Pakistan Radio from Islamabad.

"Gwadar port will be functional by the middle of this year after completion of additional dredging of the channel to 14.5 metres. This will make it the deepest port of the country and the trans-shipment Port for the region," the radio quoted him as saying.
