Telecom cos set to cut tariffs

Our Bureau

Chennai, Feb. 25

More telecom companies are set to slash tariffs across the country, following the One India tariff announced recently by BSNL and MTNL, the state-owned operators.

"From March 1, 90 per cent of the private sector operators will join the One India bandwagon," said Mr Dayanidhi Maran, Communications and IT Minister, here on Saturday after inaugurating the research and development, and global service delivery centres of Ericsson, the Swedish telecom equipment manufacturer.

Both mobile and fixed line service providers are looking at having uniform tariffs across the country. Mr Maran said the Government had removed barriers, paving the way for tariffs to be slashed. The One India plan was just one of the ways to fuel competition in the telecom sector. With this, he is confident that India would reach a total telecom subscriber base of 250 million by 2007.
