Poultry sector plan to get back on its feet — Bollywood likely to lend succour

The campaign programme being chalked out will carry different flavours in different parts of the country.

Pune , Feb. 22

THE poultry industry plans to add a dash of glamour to the avian flu-hit sectorby launching various campaign programmes across the country. For this, Bollywood is also expected to be roped in.

Ms Anuradha Desai, Chairperson of the Rs 1,300-crore Venkateshwara Hatcheries, said the campaign programme, which is being chalked out, will carry different flavours in different parts of the country. The campaign's main attraction would be food melas, where chicken and egg would be cooked and "eaten in the same venue, so that people are made aware that they no longer need to fear the flu."

She noted that the loss, which is being incurred by the poultry industry, is almost Rs 200 crore per day and the total so far has touched more than Rs 1,900 crore.

About the show-cause notice sent by the Maharashtra Government, Ms Desai noted that the notice, which had been issued by the District Collector of Navapur, had been given to one farmer in Navapur and not to the company. The notice mentioned that there was supply of chicken from Venkateshwara Hatcheries, just like any other player in the market. She said that the company had been asked whether there had been supplies to Navapur.

She reiterated the fact that H5N1 is not a vertically transmitted disease and could be spread across only through a virus or through non-vaccinated birds, which are imported into the country.

Ms Desai said the movement of chicken across the State border has completely stopped. This would result in more chicken deaths, "not because of any disease but because of the sheer heat." Most of the neighbouring States had stopped giving orders, but the situation has become much better now and new orders are being placed..

"McDonald's has reported increased sales and it is also planning to take part in the campaign," she added.
