Poultry Broilers: Retail sales too hit
Amit Mitra
Mumbai , Feb. 20 WHOLESALE prices of broilers in the city have come sharply by nearly 30 per cent to Rs 30-32 per kg of broiler (live) in past two days following the suspected outbreak of bird flu in the Navapur taluka of Nandurbar district in North Maharashtra. "Retail sales in Mumbai and Thane have affected badly due to consumers' resistance, after media reports of bird flu flashed on Saturday. Our sales volume has gone down by 50 per cent," Mr Shakeel Ahmed, a local trader told Business Line. Daily arrivals of broilers from Pune, Nasik and Panvel region have reduced drastically from normal 4-5 lakh broilers to 3.0-3.5 lakh per day. "Traders are confused and they don't know how to react and what to do but one thing we could like to say is that not a single broiler has come from Navapur. There is no need to panic on the reports of bird flu," Mr Ganesh Puro, a leading wholesaler in the city. "There is uncertainty in the local trade and we may loose our business till the situation improves," he said. Retail sales have also gone down on Monday. Daily truckloads have come down to 200 from 250, he said. "We are awaiting the final test report that has been sent to London as special initiative taken by Mr Sharad Pawar, Union Agriculture Minister," said Mr Omkar Singh of Batra Farm Product (I) Pvt. Ltd., who deals in poultry medicines, vaccines and feed supplements.
