Singapore Tourism eyes markets in secondary cities

SECONDARY cities in India are emerging as new markets for Singapore tourism, while some of the metros such as Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad have shown a decline in growth.

Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore continue to be prominent markets with a 48-per cent increase last year.

Arrivals from India aggregated to 5.83 lakh last year, to make it the fifth largest source market for Singapore.

Smaller cities such as Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jaipur and Indore showed an upward trend, while Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad witnessed a 58 per cent decline, said Ms Brigitte, Chogh, Director, Chennai and Southern Region, Singapore Tourism Board.

Ms Brigitte said though Bangalore with a 25 per cent increase last year continued to be the leader from Karnataka, Mysore and Mangalore, with a projection in growth of six per cent and eleven per cent, also displayed their potential to being source for Singapore.

Attributing the increasing affluence amongst middle class, introduction of low-cost carriers, providing easer access to Singapore as the key factor for the growth, Ms Siew-Kheng Kang, Regional Director (South Asia, Middle East and Africa), said Singapore has been upgrading its product offerings to ensure its relevance to well travelled consumers.

Singapore has been constantly refurbishing its products, she said, adding S$10 billion was invested as part of a master plan to revamp its popular attractions such as Sentosa, where two new resorts are being developed, a comprehensive facilities for conferences, lifestyle entertainment and retail outlets, while Orchard Road, one of the world's best shopping destinations, being revitalised to feature innovative retail and lifestyle concepts.

She said visitors would have an entirely new experience of the destinations after the new projects would be ready in next two years.
