Power Phase I of Dabhol plant to be restarted from May 15 Our Bureau
New Delhi , Feb. 15 THE 740-MW first phase of the Dabhol power project is slated for restart from May 15, with the station scheduled to be run initially on expensive naphtha as gas supplies are still to be tied up for the idle project. The project could be run for around three hours daily to meet the peak hour requirements of electricity-starved Maharashtra, the Power Secretary, Mr R.V. Shahi, said here on Wednesday."The first phase of the plant would be run from May 15 on naphtha to meet the peak hour requirements," Mr Shahi told newspersons on the sidelines of a seminar here. He said that around 34,000 tonnes of naphtha were already in stock, which would help the 740-MW unit produce electricity for around three hours daily for two-and-a-half months. The 1,444-MW Phase II of the plant would be completed by November this year and by then the project could be run on gas, he said. Even if gas supplies are firmed up now, it cannot be used as the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal is yet to be completed, he added. The LNG terminal, which is about 80 per cent complete, is expected to be ready by August this year, Mr Shahi said. Running the plant on naphtha would help the State reduce electricity shortages during the peak summer months. Maharashtra currently is facing a peak shortage of around 4,500 MW, resulting in long power cuts across the State. The new promoters GAIL (India) Ltd and NTPC Ltd are yet to firm up a gas or LNG supply agreement for the project. While naphtha is priced higher than LNG, resulting in higher cost for electricity generation from the plant, the Maharashtra Government has indicated that it will subsidise the Dabhol power to make it more affordable.
