Kolkata , Feb. 15

THE Rs 18-crore food processing park on 50 acres of land at Sankrail, Howrah district, with world-class infrastructure facilities, was inaugurated today by the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

The park is located 28 km away from the city on the National Highway-6.

The chief minister also laid a foundation stone for a polypark that is to come up at an adjacent plot.

Mr Bhattacherjee said there was enough scope in the State, after iron & steel manufacturing, to develop food-processing industry as it produced nearly 50 million tonnes of vegetables. He said a series of plastics units would be set up at the polypark, based on downstream raw materials from Haldia Petrochemnicals Ltd.

Indian Plastics Federation has been asked to act as the nodal agency to help develop the polypark, expected to ready within a year.

The State's Commerce & Industry Minister, Mr Nirupam Sen, said Bengal targets to attract about Rs 15,000 crore in the food processing sector.

In fact, initiatives have been taken to set up a total 10 food and fruit processing parks in the State.

The Sankrail park was one of such parks accommodating about 20 units, which will generate direct employment for 1,500 people, while indirect employment would be five times more.
