New management programme to let students get exposure to industry

Our Bureau

Chennai , Feb. 14

INDUSTRY has been concerned about the quality of students passing out of engineering and management colleges for a long time, according to Mr J.N. Amrolia, Executive Director, Ashok Leyland.

Speaking at the announcement of the student manager-shadowing programme by Trans-Action Partners, an international not-for-profit training, consultancy and educational organisation, he said that for a while now companies have been talking to colleges and devising programmes by which students can get exposure to industry prior to their passing out.

Ms Maureen Guirdham, Partner, Trans-Action Partners, said that manager shadowing means that select students from management or engineering colleges would accompany the executive or manager as he or she works, seeing what issues are dealt with, how they are dealt with, and would be given the opportunity to ask for explanations. This would provide opportunities for the students to see the criteria and standards followed by companies, and would help them prepare for their careers and help them gain more from their studies subsequently, she said.

She said that the programme ran successfully in six other countries including the Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria and Kazakhstan, where she had run the programme, and in Poland and Russia where she had devised the model and the Prince of Wales Business Leaders Forum had executed it.

Mr A. Eugin P. Fernando, Head of the Department of Management Sciences at Sriram Engineering College, is the Trans-Action partners' co-ordinator for Tamil Nadu.
