New Delhi , Feb. 13

THE National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has constituted a two-member inquiry committee to investigate the reasons and circumstances for the failure of the approach road of the railway over bridge with the reinforced earth wall on the Dankuni-Kolaghat section of NH-6 in West Bengal.

The committee comprises Mr C.C. Bhattacharya, Former Director General (Road Development), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and Mr S.P. Das Gupta, Head of Civil Engineering Department, IIT, Kharagpur, according to a release.

On the Dankuni-Kolaghat section of NH-6 in West Bengal, a 100-m portion of the embankment along with a reinforced earth wall on the right side approach road of the new railway over bridge suddenly sank in the early hours on February 9, stated the release.

In view of the damage to the two lanes of the four-lane carriageway, the Mumbai-Kolkata traffic has been diverted to the old railway over bridge, which runs parallel to the new one near the Dankuni Interchange. The committee has been asked to visit the site immediately and submit the preliminary detailed report within seven days.
