`Banks must focus on other income'

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Feb. 7

THE Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Karnataka Bank Ltd, Mr Ananthakrishna, has said that the banks are under stress with avenues for earnings getting narrowed down by the `not-so-attractive' income from treasury operations.

Speaking at the review conference of the regional heads of the bank here on Tuesday, he stressed the need to give more focus on other income.

He called upon the regional heads to bestow greater attention on areas that fetch optimum yield to the bank. The share of low-cost deposit should be increased and also the customer base should be expanded so that the volume of business increases, he said.

Competition in the banking industry should be regarded as an opportunity to business. Efficient services with speed will surely give an edge to the bank over its competitors, he added.

A bank release said here that Mr P. Jayarama Bhat, Chief General Manager, who gave a brief account of the performance of the bank during the quarter ended December 2005, unfolded the plan for future.

The General Managers, Mr G.K. Bhat and Mr N.S. Chakkera, spoke on the occasion.
