New curriculum for CA exams proposed

Our Bureau

Chennai , Feb. 7

EXPLORING Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA) with other accounting bodies, facilitating Government accounting reforms, and the launching and promotion of a new curriculum for CA examinations are some of the measures that form a part of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India's (ICAI) mission statement for 2006.

Mr T.N. Manoharan, President, ICAI, said that he had submitted the mission statement to the council.

Speaking to presspersons, he said that on the macro level, the mission statement included measures such as changing government accounting policy from the cash system to the accrual system of accounting, and bringing the expertise of ICAI members to projects involving the development of the agricultural sector, such as Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA).

He said some of the more specific measures include strengthening of technical and research activities of the ICAI. This includes establishing technical directorates in Mumbai, Kolkata, Kanpur and Chennai. The only centre now is in New Delhi. Also, the institute will look to set up 17 centres of excellence, 5 in the regional centres, and 12 in areas where the member strength exceeds 1,000. He said that land has been acquired in some of these places including Noida and Kolkata, while centres have been established in Hyderabad and Mumbai.

The institute will also look to secure MRAs and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with accounting bodies in other countries, so that certified CAs in either country could practise their profession in the area coming under the other accounting body's jurisdiction. This would facilitate for sharing of expertise in international forums, he said.
