Foods & Food Processing Agri-business policy under review: Sahay Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Feb 7 APPRECIATING Kerala's progress in developing the food processing industry, the Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, Mr Subodh Kant Sahay, said the proposed mega food park in Kochi, to be located on 200 acres of land, would be eligible for Central assistance to the tune of Rs 50 crore. At a meeting organised by Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) in the city today, the Minister said efforts were on to include the agribusiness sector in the infrastructure category. The proposal is being considered as part of the impending agribusiness policy for the country. A Group of Ministers is currently reviewing the draft policy, he added. According to Mr Sahay, India's Integrated Food Law is likely to be passed during the forthcoming Budget Session of Parliament. The Minister emphasised that the food-processing sector can serve as a link between rural India and the rest of the world and foster rural development. India has the potential to become the "food factory of the world" and all that is required is sufficient investment in the food-processing sector, he added. The Kerala Industries Minister, Mr V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, and the State's Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Mr Adoor Prakash, also addressed the gathering, which was attended by representatives of various industry organisations, entrepreneurs and government officials.
