Exporters booking space in Irrungatukottai apparel park

Nina Varghese

Chennai , Feb. 2

MOST of the space at the 125-acre apparel park at Irrungatukottai in Kanchipuram district has been allotted to exporters. About 30 exporters have booked space and construction of some of the apparel factories have also started, according to sources.

This park is a part of the Union Government's proposal to give a fillip to garment exports by providing the right environment. This would help to achieve its export target of $25 billion in 2010, according to the National Textile Policy 2000.

It is a part of the 2,000-acre SIPCOT (State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu) Industrial Park, which hosts Hyundai Motor India Ltd and Matshusita Industries Ltd, among others.

It is being developed by SIPCOT with aid from the Union Government. The total cost of development is about Rs 26.7 crore with Rs 16 crore as grant from the Centre.

Of the total 125 acres, over 94.85 acres have been allotted for apparel units on a 99-year lease. Companies from Sri Lanka and Dubai have also taken space here, sources said.

The land was offered to the exporters at three different pricing levels. To encourage them take up space, initially the land was priced at Rs 7.65 lakh per acre, then hiked to Rs 9.56 lakh per acre and now it is Rs 11.95 lakh per acre.

The current price of land elsewhere at the SIPCOT industrial park is Rs 20 lakh an acre.

A training institute for ground level technical staff is the first priority at the new apparel park, exporters said. They said that lack of skilled manpower was a problem faced by the industry. Common amenities such as working women hostel, design centre, day care centre and common effluent treatment plant are being planned. Another important feature would be a truck terminal, which would be shared with the industrial park.
