Manipur annual Plan fixed at Rs 1,160 cr

THE annual Plan for Manipur for the year 2006-07 has been finalised at Rs 1,160 crore, which is inclusive of Rs 419 crore for special reconstruction plan and projects of priority to the State.

This was decided here on Thursday at a meeting between the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and the Chief Minister of Manipur, Mr Okram Ibobi Singh.

Reviewing the Plan performance of the State, Mr Ahluwalia said that special efforts should be made to train the youth for gainful employment.

More ITIs should be opened for this purpose. Food processing should be given high priority and power reforms should be taken up to reduce transmission & distribution losses.

He also suggested taking up social forestry in a big way to maintain environment and to provide employment. He appreciated the State for its efforts to increase utilisation of Central resources.

Briefing the Planning Commission about various schemes and projects planned by the State Government, the Chief Minister said that special schemes have been taken up to improve transportation, performance in the power sector and health care.

In the area of education, efforts are being made to improve science and mathematics-teaching facilities in hill areas.

Irrigation potential in the State will be increased to 104.10 thousand hectares by 2007-08 from the present 28.50 thousand hectares and horticulture will be expanded.

Electrification of all villages will be achieved by 2010, he added.
