Hardware PortalPlayer develops tech for dual display Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Feb. 1 LIKE flip phones with dual screens, soon you will have laptops that will feature secondary displays that will allow a user to enjoy a host of entertainment-cum-personal scheduling features, without having to switch it on. However, there are two important aspects to this technology that has been developed by PortalPlayer Inc, in partnership with Microsoft Corporation. The first requisite is it needs the yet-to-be-launched new Windows version Vista, and a computer with a chip built on Preface technology. PortalPlayer develops the core technologies that drive today's most popular personal media products. The President and Chief Executive Officer of PortalPlayer, Mr Gary Johnson, said this personal media display system could handle a whole lot of issues right from tracking stock market quotations, to playing the latest song on its MP3 player, and serving as personal scheduler through Outlook. "It has the potential of even switching on the computer, should there be requirement to extract latest information. We are also exploring ways to see if this can come in as a plug-in along with other operating systems such as Media Centre and Windows," he said. "The technology allows the laptop save on battery, making it convenient for users and seeks to address this major pain point for laptop users," he said. "Along with the launch of the Vista, we expect laptops would come in with this new feature. The notebook market is projected to be about 60 million in 2006 . What we have managed to do with Apple iPod, with the MP3 processor, we could potentially do for laptops," Mr Johnson said.
