Politics Industry & Economy - Petroleum More time to concentrate on Panchayati Raj: Aiyar Our Bureau
New Delhi , Jan. 29 MR MANI Shankar Aiyar is said to be one of the major losers in the first Cabinet reshuffle by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Sunday. The high-profile Minister, who advocated oil diplomacy for energy security, has been stripped of his Petroleum portfolio, which now goes to Mr Murli Deora. Mr Aiyar will retain the Panchayati Raj Ministry and will also be vested with additional responsibility of Youth Affairs & Sports. When contacted by Business Line, Mr Aiyar said, "It is the Prime Minister's prerogative to give portfolios and take them away. And I accept that. Now, of course, I have far more time to concentrate on the Panchayati Raj Ministry." According to sources, Mr Aiyar, in his zeal for oil diplomacy, had rubbed his friends in the External Affairs Ministry the wrong way. His public spat with chiefs of state-owned oil companies, and his move to keep domestic oil prices under control which left the oil marketing companies bleeding, seem to have worked against him. To many Mr Aiyar's stress on greater accountability of the oil companies towards the Ministry was out of sync with the liberalisation mantra of the Government. With the induction of Mr Murli Deora, as the Petroleum Minister, the thrust on energy security, especially at a time when global crude oil prices are on the boil, is expected to remain. From Mumbai mayor to the new Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister, the journey has been a long one for Mr Deora.
