Annually, 10 per cent of the country's foodgrain production is lost in the post-harvest period during storage and transportation. While rodents and insects damage foodgrains during storage, leakage and pilfering are reasons for the loss in transportation.

The country's foodgrain production has been averaging around 200 million tonnes for the last couple of years and this year, it is projected to be 208.5 million tonnes.
