Senior citizens woes

The Unit Trust of India (UTI), under its senior citizen unit plan scheme, has fixed the maximum limit of Rs 1.50 lakh payment per hospitalisation with the minimum period between two hospitalisations as 45 days. This scheme was launched about a decade ago for the benefit of senior citizens on the initial one time premium of Rs 35,000 that has now been discontinued. The amount with no-claim bonuses could add up to about Rs 7.50 lakh. The limit of Rs 1.50 lakh per claim is inadequate given the steep rise in medical expenses. The common cause for hospitalisation for senior citizens is angioplasty or a by-pass surgery, which does not cost less than Rs 2.50 lakh. It is the UTI's social responsibility to increase the claim so that is sufficiently covers the present high health-care costs.
