India among top five markets for Singapore tourism

Our Bureau

Chennai , Jan. 20

IN 2005, India emerged as one of the top five markets for Singapore tourism with 5.83 lakh visitors to the island nation. The other countries are Indonesia (1.8 million visitors), China (858,000), Australia (620,000) and Japan (588,000). These five markets accounted for about 50 per cent of total visitor arrivals.

According to a press release, the tourism sector generated about S$10.8 billion in tourism receipts in 2005, a growth of 10 per cent over 2004. Singapore received 8.94 million visitors last year, exceeding its target of 8.9 million visitor arrivals, an increase of 7 per cent over 2004.

Asia (6.5 million visitors) continues to be an important source market for Singapore, contributing to over 73 per cent of the total visitor arrivals, an increase of 7 per cent over 2004. Last year's performance was also driven by double-digit growth from Vietnam (42 per cent), the Philippines (30 per cent) and India (24 per cent). This is also the first time that India is one of Singapore's top five markets.

Based on the latest figures, the average occupancy rate for the hotel sector reached 84 per cent from January to November 2005, registering a growth of 4 per cent over the same period in 2004. Hotel room revenue grew by15 per cent to reach S$1.1 billion. The Singapore Tourism Board is unveiling Phase Two of the Uniquely Singapore brand campaign through a global print and TV campaign.
