Rlys earnings up 15 pc in Apr-Dec `05

INDIAN Railways registered a 15 per cent increase in total earnings with revenues of Rs 38,928.56 crore during April 1-December 31, 2005 as compared to Rs 33,762.16 crore during the same period the previous fiscal.

The total earnings were 4.91 per cent more than the Budget target of Rs 37,108.14 crore, said a statement.

Earnings from freight went up by almost 18 per cent touching Rs 26,054.79 crore for the nine-month period as compared to Rs 22,081.42 crore during the corresponding period last year. Meanwhile, Railways earned Rs 11,448.06 crore from its passenger transportation services during the period, which reflects an increase of 8.25 per cent over Rs 10,575.55 crore. Earnings from other coaching services went up by 17.99 per cent touching Rs 857.46 crore compared to Rs 722.43 crore.

Number of passengers travelling through trains went up to 439.511 crore during April-December 2005 compared to 412.461 crore during the same period last year showing an increase of 6.56 per cent.
