Reduction in food subsidy to raise State Govt burden

IN view of the cut in food subsidy imposed by the Centre the burden on the subsidy portion of Andhra Pradesh Government would be around Rs 500-Rs 600 crore per annum, according to officials of the Civil Supplies Department.

The State Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who was informed of the situation said the State would request the Centre to rollback the entire increase.

In addition, it would seek an increase in the Above Poverty Line allotment of rice from 1,06,200 tonnes to 2,39,000 tonnes.

The Chief Minister, who reviewed a departmental meeting also directed the Minister for Civil Supplies & Agriculture and the Commissioner, Civil Supplies to go to Delhi immediately and request the Ministry of Agriculture to sort out the issue.

Dr Reddy would also write a letter to the Union Minister for Agriculture, Mr Sharad Pawar, in this regard, an official press release said.

According to the Civil Supplies officials, in the existing allotment of rice by Government of India, under BPL scheme 87,675 tonnes, covering 25.05 lakh families at the rate of 35 kgs for family per month at Rs 5.65 per kg was provided.

Under AAY scheme, the allotment was 54,523 tonnes covering 15.578 lakh families at 35 kg per month per family at Rs 3.00 per kg.

Under APL scheme, 1,76,089 tonnes were allotted covering 50.31 lakh families at 35 kg per month per family at Rs 8.30 per kg.

In view of the recent decision of the Union Cabinet the likely allotments to the schemes in the State would be 75,150 tonnes covering 25.05 lakh BPL families at 30 kgs per family per month at Rs 5.65 per kg.

Under AAY 46,734 tonnes covering 15.578 lakh AAY families at 30 kg per family per month at Rs 3.00 per kg.

Under APL scheme, the allotment would be 1,06,200 tonnes covering 50.31 lakh families at 20 kg per family per month at Rs 9.15 per kg.
