Kerala: Tourism trends highlighted

Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 6

TOURISM is an important economic activity for Kerala, said Mr E.K. Bharath Bhushan, Principal Secretary-Tourism, Government of Kerala.

Inaugurating a two-day seminar on `Issues and trends in eco-tourism development in India' organised by the All Indian Tourism Teachers Association in the city on Friday, he pointed out Kerala earns foreign exchange worth around Rs 1,300 crore from tourism, while the State's total earnings from the tourism sector are around Rs 6,000 crore.

Eco-tourism has now emerged as an important component of the Kerala experience, he pointed out.

Similarly, the focus has shifted from `sun and sand' tourism to the alert independent traveller, he added.

Over 100 delegates from across the country are participating in the seminar, which is being hosted by Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies.

The seminar is the third such annual event to be organised by the All India Tourism Teachers Association.
