Ground frost warned as chilly weather prevails in North

Vinson Kurian

The prevailing cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are likely to continue and extend to more parts of the North India including the Indo-Gangetic plains during the next three days.

Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 5

COLD wave to severe cold wave conditions prevailed over parts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana during the 24 hours ending on Thursday morning even as the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) detected a western disturbance over north Pakistan and neighbourhood.

`Cold day' conditions prevailed over parts of Punjab and Haryana where actual maximum temperatures remained below 16 deg Celsius. The lowest minimum temperature of -0.1 deg Celsius on Wednesday was recorded at Adampur (Punjab).

The cold wave conditions are likely to persist over some parts of northwest India during the next two days as well. Due to low night temperatures, ground frost is likely over some parts of Punjab, Haryana and north Rajasthan during the next two nights.

Subsequently, the night temperatures may increase leading to a cessation of cold wave conditions.

The western disturbance is likely to move in east-northeastward direction causing isolated to scattered snowfall in hilly regions of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh during the next two days, says an NCMRWF forecast.

Additionally, it cited various weather models predicting another western disturbance approaching Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas of northwest India by Monday/Tuesday next. Under its influence, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal and adjoining plains of Punjab and Haryana are likely to experience snowfall and rain during these two days. The prevailing cold wave to severe cold wave conditions over parts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana are likely to continue and extend to more parts of north India including the Indo-Gangetic plains during the next three days, the NCMRWF said.

Fog is likely to cover more parts of the plains during the morning and evening hours during the next two to three days. Some parts of the plains have already reported frost, which is likely to extend to more parts during the next three days. This could hit some of the rabi crops badly.

The hilly regions of northwest India are likely to receive isolated to scattered snowfall/rains during the next two days. Scattered to fairly widespread snowfall/rains are likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal on Monday/Tuesday, while it will be isolated to scattered over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh.

Central India is likely to experience mainly dry weather condition. There may be slight fall in night temperatures by two to three degree Celsius during the next three days.

In the south, an incoming easterly wave is likely to cause scattered rainfall during next two days, and again during Monday/Tuesday, over Andaman and Nicobar, south coastal Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep.
