Left opposes disinvestment

This is with reference to, "Left opposes divestment in profitable PSUs", (Business Line, January 3). Government proposing and the Left disposing seems to have become a routine affair.

The Finance Minister has said that the proceeds of the sale would go to the National Investment Fund (NIF) and would not be accounted for budgetary purposes. But the opposition to the proposal appears to be on ideological principles.

If divestment is only for raising funds the Left is not wrong.

Funds can be raised in other ways also.

But if it is also for reducing government flab, for instance, there should be transparency. The matter should have been resolved.
