PHARMA company Wockhardt Ltd has received regulatory approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) for marketing epilepsy drug Zonisamide capsules, in the US.

Zonisamide is the generic or chemically similar version of Dainippon's Zonegran capsules and according to a note from Wockhardt, it is among the first to receive approvals for this market.

The current market of Zonisamide in the US is $174 million and the overall anti-epileptic market is estimated to be about $8 billion.

"Wockhardt will be amongst the first company to launch generic Zonisamide in the US," said the Wockhardt Chairman, Mr Habil Khorakiwala, adding that the Abbreviated New Drug Application received approval in less than nine months from the date it was filed.
