Power Transmission lines trip in north India Our Bureau
New Delhi , Dec. 23 A POSSIBLE collapse of the Northern Grid was averted after the tripping of inter-State transmission lines in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir early in the morning today. The tripping, which was caused due to a combination of fog and pollution, plunged parts of Punjab, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi into darkness for several hours in the morning. "The tripping was attended to immediately and normalcy was restored within four hours," a Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) official said, adding the situation could have had a possible ripple effect along the entire Northern Grid. At around 6.00 a.m., the Control Room of the Northern Grid was forced to reduce the power supply to Punjab as some lines tripped due to the dense fog and the smoke generated by burning of farm waste in parts of Punjab. As soon as the problem was noticed, power supply from the Northern Grid to Punjab was cut down drastically, while in the case of Chandigarh, the supply was reduced to 22 MW from the stipulated 125 MW, PGCIL officials said. Supply to Jammu and Kashmir came down to 350 MW from the normal position of 750 MW "The problem in the morning forced Punjab, Chandigarh and Jammu-Kashmir to draw less than their stipulated quota of power from the Grid. Normalcy was restored at around 10 a.m. and subsequently all the affected State electricity boards have been asked to draw their normal power supply from the Grid," an official said.
