ABOUT 80 delegates from 27 countries including three Nobel Laureates, 5,000 experts and non-government organisations specialising in rural development are expected to take part in the 93rd Indian Science Congress to be held at Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University here next month.

Reviewing the arrangement for the Congress here on Wednesday , the State Agriculture Minister, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, said that for the first time an agriculture university was hosting the ISC. The theme of the five-day Science Congress set to get underway on January 3, would be `Integrated Rural development: science and technology.'

The event would particularly discuss issues on how science and technology could be harnessed for integrated rural development.

While the Prime Minister would inaugurate the Congress and Bharat Nirman Science Exhibition, the President would inaugurate the focal theme a National Virtual Congress for farmers on January 5 and launch Mission 2007: Every Village— a Knowledge centre.

Some 1,000 papers would be presented during technical sessions covering areas such as food and nutrition, encouraging IT along with biotechnology in rural areas, and issues relating to elimination of hunger and poverty.

The General President of Science Congress, Mr I.V.Subba Rao, said that the theme integrated rural development was timely and seeks to converge various development approaches.

A committee headed by Mr M.S. Swaminathan would submit a report that would help chart out a roadmap to improve the quality of life in rural areas.
