MCX to provide real-time price info to State e-centres

Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 21

THE Kerala State IT Mission (KSITM) and the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) have entered into an agreement for dissemination of commodity price information through the e-krishi electronic platform and select Akshaya e-centres in the State.

The National Spot Exchange for Agricultural Produces (NSEAP), an MCX initiative, is also involved in the venture. Mr V. Hariharan, Director, MCX, and Mr Anand Singh, Director, KSITM, signed the memorandum of understanding here on Wednesday in the presence of the Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy. The IT Secretary, Mr P.H. Kurian, was also present.

Simultaneously, the Chief Minister also launched the e-krishi project, which aims to bring on a single platform all stakeholders in agri-business.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Hariharan said the KSITM-MCX venture would be the first step towards realising the national integrated marked envisioned by the Prime Minister. New transaction products and commodities are being introduced into the market during this phase.

Dissemination of price information on a real-time basis would be the biggest spin-off from the new arrangement. This will provide an efficient price discovery mechanism to the farmer. The seven or eight steps that farmers invariably have to contend with while reaching out to the market will also have been eliminated.

The MoU seeks to build on the strategic alliance for all market development services and offerings. It will also evolve suitable solutions for propagation of commodity marketing linkages for farmers and explore possibilities of setting up trading terminals at the Akshaya e-centres.

Mr Roy Mathew of the KSITM said that a VSAT link has been established between the KSITM central server hosted at the State Information Infrastructure Data Centre and the MCX to make available futures and spot prices.

Akshaya e-centres will be the service delivery nodes in the last mile, said Mr A.V. Narayanaswami, Consultant to e-krishi project. Successfully piloted in the Malappuram district, the Akshaya centres will be rolled out to seven more districts in the next phase.
