New Delhi , Dec. 19

THE Ministry of Tourism has asked the Planning Commission to request each Ministry to set aside a certain portion of its funds for the development of tourism-related infrastructure, the Minister for Tourism, Ms Renuka Chowdhury, has said.

"If each Ministry gives some funds, then the tourism sector will really take off," the Minister said while addressing the sixth annual Tourism and Heritage summit here on Monday. The two-day meet has been organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

The Ministry has also approached the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, to waive the import duty on equipment used for adventure tourism. "We are seeking the waiver for a short period till such time as the sector becomes self-sustaining," Ms Chowdhury said.

Outlining the steps being taken by the Ministry to promote tourism, the Minister said that airlines were being approached to operate flights to some key tourism destinations in various States.

The Ministry has written to the Ministry of Human Resource Development to see whether the courses offered by the various hotel management institutes could be recognised by the University Grants Commission. Addressing the meeting the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, Mr Nilotpal Basu, called for the creation of a National Tourism Promotion Board.
