`Detach personal values from organisational values'

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Dec. 16

ETHICS are self-inflicted rules and there are grey areas in legal and ethical issues that have to be clarified by individual employees.

Addressing students of MATS School of Business and IT, Bangalore, Mr L.H. Bhatia, former Marketing Director, BPL Ltd, said that while personal values are shaped by individual factors, one has to detach personal values from organisational values. Factors that impact ethical decision-making process in marketing area are individual factors, professional opportunity that the employee has got and organisational relationships.

"Sometimes, successful organisations will get away with what is misconstrued as ethical," he said. He gave examples of ethical issues in marketing that students have to watch out for: deceptive pricing and packaging, pressure selling, shoddy and unsafe products, planned obsolescence.

Strategic philanthropy achieves both organisational and social benefits. Organisations have to satisfy stakeholders first and then offer distinct benefits for society, he said.
