LPG shortage largely under control: Aiyar

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec 8

THE Petroleum Minister, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, assured the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that the shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been largely brought under control. The situation was likely to normalise further with restrictions on new connections being lifted from December 1, he said.

Responding to a calling attention motion on the shortage of cooking gas and black marketing of kerosene, the Minister said the current shortfall was less than 1.5 per cent. He expected this shortfall also to be overcome by the month-end.

On whether there was any order from the Government to the oil marketing companies (OMCs) or dealers to not issue new connections, Mr Aiyar made it clear that "no such order was issued from the Government."

The Petroleum Minister also informed the Upper House that State Governments have been asked to curtail diversion of LPG and kerosene, and other malpractices by taking stringent action under the Essential Commodities Act. Further, the OMCs have been directed to strictly adhere to marketing guidelines. The companies have also taken several steps to check black marketing of kerosene sold under the public distribution system and ensure it reached those entitled to it, he said.

Elaborating on the Government's initiatives, Mr Aiyar said his Ministry has launched Jan Kerosene Pariyojana to revamp the PDS network and ensure that subsidised kerosene was available only to intended beneficiaries and eliminate its diversion for adulteration.
