New Delhi , Dec. 6

THE Steel Authority of India Ltd announced, on Tuesday, plans for modernising its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in Orissa with an investment of Rs 348 crore.

This is part of the company's corporate plan to achieve 20 million tonnes capacity by 2011-12.

The plan includes acquiring new technology to upgrade production facilities at RSP. This plan is in addition to the capital schemes valued at over Rs 3,500 crore currently under various stages of implementation, according to a company release.

The four Coke Oven Batteries at RSP would be rebuilt at an estimated cost of Rs 195 crore. The investment aims at meeting environmental norms while implementing its massive growth plan, it said, adding the revamping of batteries would help RSP to meet its higher requirement of coke for enhanced hot metal production, the release added. About Rs 116 crore would be spent on installing a coal dust injection system at the plant, which is part of its decision to install alternative fuel technologies in all the blast furnaces.
