MCCI creates database
Our Bureau
CHENNAI: The Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has created a database of independent directors consisting of representatives from the industry, tax professionals, advocates, software experts and consultants so that any listed company requiring a representative for their board can approach the MCCI.
The database has been formulated in the light of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) having fixed December 31, as the deadline for listed companies to appoint one-third of the board strength as independent directors.
Apart from this, MCCI is also planning to conduct a series of training programmes on the subject of independent directors to help participants understand the activities of board management. The programmes will also look at areas such as corporate governance, various provisions of the Companies Act, SEBI regulations, and other laws in general.
According to a statement issued by the chamber, listed companies are expected to appoint not just company secretaries and finance representatives as independent directors on the board, but also software professionals, representatives from non-government organisations and academicians. This will be taken into account in the first training programme scheduled to run from December 14-16.
