A party flag hoisted over a heap of mud unloaded for filling a paddy field in Angamali near Kochi on Friday. Widespread reclamation of paddy fields for construction of buildings has evoked strong protests from the Left parties who sometimes physically block the ecologically destructive practice. The acreage of paddy cultivation in the State has come down to 3,10,521 hectares in 2002-03 from 5,59,450 hectares in 1990-91.
