Chennai , Dec. 1

THE President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, on Thursday urged Indian pharmaceutical companies not to stop with the discovery and marketing molecules, but start converting them into drugs.

This was a big challenge that Indian companies should take up, he said during a visit to the formulations complex of Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd, at Sriperumbudur near here on Thursday.

He said he was looking forward to the day when there would be an "India designed, developed, produced and marketed drug in the world."

The President expressed his happiness after Mr K. Raghavendra Rao, Orchid's Managing Director, said that the company was working on such a conversion. For companies to achieve this conversion, there has to be a creative leader. When a commander becomes a coach, a manager would become a mentor and a director would transform into a delegator.

Mr Kalam observed that a convergence of information technology, biotechnology and nanotechnology is taking place.
