THE Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) announced the opening of its South Asia Regional Secretariat at the Asian Energy Institute (AEI) in New Delhi.
REEEP is a public-private partnership formed in 2002 during the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg and has the status of an international NGO.
Dr R.K. Pachauri, a REEEP Governing Board member and Director-General of Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI), said, "Many countries in South Asia have large and pioneering renewable energy and energy efficiency programmes, and India has been one of REEEP's priority countries since the inception of its programmes."
He observed that REEEP has so far supported several initiatives in financing, policy and regulation in South Asia under its programmes and will continue to support more initiatives in the region under its recently announced fourth programme round. The Secretariat will cover India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and co-ordinate REEEP activities in the region.
