Infrastructure Left not to oppose pvt participation in greenfield airport projects Our Bureau
Kolkata , Nov. 17 THE Left parties will not oppose private participation in greenfield airport infrastructure projects. However, they would continue to oppose private participation in existing airports, according to Mr Nilotpal Basu, Member of Parliament & Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transportation & Tourism. Addressing members of the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) here, Mr Basu said existing Government agencies such as Airports Authority of India were equipped to effectively address the infrastructure and upgradation needs of the existing airports. According to him, the Left parties would continue with their opposition to foreign direct investment in the telecom sector because they felt the resources of domestic telecom companies were enough to meet the requirements of the telecom sector in India. On the Left's stand on bandhs and strikes, Mr Basu said that to go on strike was a natural right but the Left parties were not forcing bandhs and strikes on anyone. He said the last strike called by CITU had been discussed by the Left parties in detail. Mr Basu said the progress of work on the East-West corridor was slower than on the North-South corridor because of realignment since the East-West corridor passes through forest land. The pace of work would go up after the realignment work was done, he said.
