E-Governance Info-Tech - Internet India portal a one-stop shop for Govt info, services Our Bureau
New Delhi , Nov. 11 THE Minister for Communications and IT, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, has launched the national portal of India, `www.india.gov.in', which will act as a gateway for various Central and State Government online services, including applying for marriage certificates, downloading forms for passport, and also provide information relating to Government tenders, policies and schemes. "So far, these services were being provided through distinct platforms and channels. The concept of a single-window interface in the form of a national portal has the capability to add a new dimension to the provision of these services simply because it saves citizens the additional task of searching through multiple Web sites of different Departments," Mr Maran said, after launching the portal with Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. The portal will play a key role in the ambitious National e-Governance programme, as it can serve as the front-end for the 28 mission mode projects being proposed. "I believe that all the ongoing mission mode projects of National e-Governance Programme in different sectors at Central and State level can explore an opportunity such as the National Portal to have a front-end for their various online citizen services and initiatives," he said.
The portal, developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), provides a single interface to all Government Web sites. It provides comprehensive information in sections on citizens, businesses, overseas, Government, and individual sector. The portal also acts as a one-stop shop for information pertaining to Government forms, maps and documents, and allows the content to be personalised on the basis of visitors' areas of interest and profile.
