Cultivation 5,000 ha. of wasteland to be made cultivable in Tirunelveli dist Our Correspondent
Madurai , Nov. 8 ABOUT 5,000 hectares of wasteland are to be made cultivable in 16 blocks in Tirunelveli district, under Extensive Wasteland Programme, during the current fiscal. According to the District Collector, Mr Atul Anand, an amount of Rs 4 crore has been received for the purpose. Since the launch of the scheme in 2001-02 in the State, 20-lakh hectares are sought to be brought under cultivation. Saplings of fruit bearing trees are being procured from Periakulam Horticulture College and the Government Horticulture Farm in Kanyakumari district. So far saplings have been planted on 520 hectares at a cost of Rs 86.10 lakh, he disclosed in a review meeting held recently, sources said.
