Visakhapatnam , Oct. 20

THE airport authorities here are making hectic efforts to restore flights from Saturday. "All efforts are being made for flight restoration by that day,'' Mr Suresh, the General Manager, Projects, Airports Authority of India, said.

The airport was flooded last week due to heavy rains and there have been no flights from here. The floodwaters discharged from the Meghadrigedda reservoir inundated the airport.

On Thursday, the authorities made an inspection and concluded that it might be possible to restore flights by Saturday. The runway, tarmac and the operational area of the airport have been cleared of water, but there was still water in the vicinity of the airport.

During the week, a boy was drowned in the floodwaters at the airport and some fishermen even started fishing in the area.

District authorities have mooted a plan to build a mini reservoir at a cost of Rs 28 crore to store the floodwaters from Meghadrigedda reservoir.

There has been some damage to the equipment being used in the airport expansion work and according to the contractor, Mr M. Venkata Rao, the work may be delayed. He, however, did not specify the damage.
