Telecommunications `Cellular marketing offers scope for jobs' Our Correspondent

Gandhigram , Oct 19 THE advent of cellular service has opened up a huge market for telecommunication. From one phone for every family, the scenario has changed to a cell for every individual, the General Manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), Madurai, Mr M.K. Sudarsanam, said here on Tuesday. Addressing the members of the Business Line Club at the Gandhigram Rural Institute (Deemed University), he said, given the strength of the population, marketing remains a fertile and virgin field providing tremendous scope for employment. Mr Sudarsanam said that the entry of private players and the resultant competition coupled with improvement in technology has greatly benefited the consumers both in terms of cost and variety in service to different segments of population in the country. The General Manager initially outlined the critical functional elements that facilitate and combine to give the service in terms of infrastructure, intelligence and equipment and said that BSNL has been uniquely placed in extending the service to 98 per cent of villages in the country. It stood first in the provision of service through fixed line and stood close to Bharti Telecom in cellular service. Mr Sudarsanam said that it is the seventh biggest in the telecom industry in the world, in terms of assets and network, with four lakh employees on rolls and the per day revenue earning stood around Rs 90 crore. While the reach is established in terms of area, the coverage of population in terms of tele-density is still low, he added.
