New Delhi , Oct. 12

A DESIGN and production centre for leather goods and garments will be set up at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).

A memorandum of understanding to this effect was signed between NIFT, the Indian Leather Garments Association and the Council for Leather Exports.

The centre will have visiting overseas faculty for design development and training specifically for leather goods, garments and accessories.

It will provide common computer-aided facilities for making patterns and creation of designs, presenting forecast for the domestic and global requirements, holding workshops for the training of existing manpower and inviting foreign experts to impart knowledge on designing and skills.

Leather exports from the country were of the order of Rs 10,000 crore last fiscal, which are likely to go up 15 per cent this fiscal.
