Mumbai , Oct. 7

THE Union Government is planning to offer health insurance and personal accident cover as an extension to the Universal Health Insurance Scheme, to those affected in the tsunami.

The United India Insurance Company has made a presentation regarding the design of the proposed product to the Finance Ministry, said Mr M.K. Garg, Chairman-cum Managing Director of the insurance company.

As an extension to the existing scheme, which is exclusively for below poverty line families, the new product will offer health insurance cover of up to Rs 50,000.

The product will be subsidised by the Union Government and the premium would be lower than that of the existing scheme.
