Goods traffic on Kothavalasa-Kirandul line restored

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , Oct. 7

GOODS traffic on the Kothavalasa-Kirandul railway line, disrupted since September 28 following a landslide, has been restored after the repair of the track. But the passenger traffic is yet to be restored.

A massive boulder crashed onto the track in the vicinity of Chimidipalli railway station in the Anantagiri mandal of Visakhapatnam district on the night of September 29, causing extensive damage to the track. Traffic had to be suspended since then.

The rail line, laid for transportation of iron ore from the Bailadilla mines to Visakhapatnam for export and use in the Visakhapatnam steel plant, is of crucial importance.

It is estimated that the railways might have suffered a loss of Rs 1.5 crore a day in freight and sources say the authorities are contemplating long-term measures to prevent such accidents in future on the ghat section.
