Kochi , Oct 7

THE Prime Minister of Fiji Islands, Mr Laisenia Qarase, who is heading an official Investment Mission to India, will be holding discussions with the Chairperson of the Coconut Development Board and the Chairman of Coir Board on October 13 for possible co-operation.

The Fiji Government "wants us to support it with a comprehensive plan for the development of the coconut industry," Ms Minnie Mathew, Chairperson of the Coconut Development Board, told Business Line on Friday.

She said the country was seeking assistance from the Board for upgrading the existing industry in Fiji, besides extending technical support for value addition and raising coconut plantations scientifically.

The delegation would also like to see how "we have taken up the management of coconut palms affected by mite disease."

However, she added that no directions from the Union Government have so far been received about signing any MoU with the visiting delegation.

Discussions are also scheduled with Coir Board Chairman, Mr A.C. Jose, and senior officials about the possibility of co-operating in developing coir industry in the island nation.

The delegation comprises Government officials and businesspersons of Indian origin, including Mr Y.P. Reddy, Chairman of the Tanoa group.
