MUMBAI: Autodesk Inc has signed an agreement to acquire Alias, a Canada-based privately-held developer of 3D graphics technology, for $182 million in cash, said an Autodesk press release.

The release added that the acquisition would bolster Autodesk's expertise and offerings for the design of consumer products and in the media and entertainment markets.

"The acquisition brings a pool of talented individuals, a wealth of technologies and a great set of products to Autodesk," said Mr Carl Bass, COO of Autodesk.

"By combining the technology and talents of our two companies, we will be better able to continue delivering solutions that address our customers' needs."

Alias' product lines comprise sketching, animation, visual effects, and design and the company has some of the world's premier entertainment and manufacturing companies, including BMW and General Motors, as customers.

"This acquisition is designed to leverage the strengths of both companies," said Mr Doug Walker, President and CEO of Alias.
