Girijana Sangham plans stir against bauxite mining

Visakhapatnam , Oct. 6

THE Andhra Pradesh Girijana Sangham (APGS) is organising a roundtable conference here on October 16 to discuss the effects of proposed bauxite mining in the agency (tribal) area of Visakhapatnam district and the smelter plant to be set up by the Jindal group.

The Sangham also plans to launch "Chalo Collectorate'' on October 19 in protestagainst the project, for which a memorandum of understanding was signed by the State Government with the Jindal group earlier this year.

Contending that bauxite mining in the agency area will ruin the ecology of the region and is detrimental to the livelihood of Girijans, the Sangham has been mobilising Girijans against the project.

To convince the Girijans that the project will create employment opportunities in the region and benefit them, the district officials have been organising tours for several groups of Girijans to visit Orissa to see the "progress'' achieved in the areas where Nalco is operating.

In response to the move of the administration, a six-member team representing the Sangham visited Orissa and came to the conclusion that Nalco had not taken up proper rehabilitation measures in the mining areas.

"If a public sector company like the Nalco has not taken care of the Girijans, how can we expect a private group to rehabilitate and resettle Girijans. The project in Visakhapatnam is fraught with peril and it should be given up,'' the team members said.

The APGS has also urged the Andhra Pradesh Government to come out with the details of the agreement signed with the Jindal group and make the whole issue transparent.
