UB revamps organisational structure of spirits division

Our Bureau

"I intend to integrate the companies in a phased manner that protects the business interests and ensures transparency," said Mr Vijay Mallya.

Mumbai , Oct 5

THE UB group has announced a new organisational structure for its spirits division comprising McDowell and Company Ltd, Herbertsons Ltd, Triumph Distillers and Vintners Ltd, and Shaw Wallace and Company Ltd (SWCL).

Mr Vijay K. Rekhi will now be the President of the integrated business of UB-SpD and SWCL. He will be responsible for running the integrated business and taking all operational decisions. He will report to the Chairman, Mr Vijay Mallya.

Mr Rekhi was so far President of the UB Spirits Division comprising McDowell and Herbertsons.

Mr S.D. Lalla has been appointed as Joint President of United Spirits Ltd (USL). Mr Lalla would continue to be the Managing Director of Herbertsons and SWCL and will report to Mr Rekhi.

Mr A.K.M.A. Shamsuddin will be Deputy President (Corporate Affairs) of USL. In his new role, he would be responsible for driving key corporate initiatives and special projects requiring corporate attention. He would report to Mr Lalla/Mr Rekhi, said a UB release.

Performance `good': In a statement today regarding the new structure, Mr Mallya said, "We have now completed three months of our acquisition of Shaw Wallace and Company I am pleased with the performance of the combined business."

Regarding the imperative to operationally integrate the operations of UB-SpD and SWCL, he said: "This is necessary to maximise the business value of our entire spirits business and as a prelude to creation of United Spirits. I intend to integrate the companies in a phased manner that protects the business interests and ensures transparency."

Profit centres: The new organisational structure will now have an additional Profit Centre as RPC Andhra Pradesh and will make the total number of five RPCs instead of the current four. This has been done considering the tremendous volume growth and operations, the release said. Marketing is to be led by Mr Alok Gupta, purchase and manufacturing by Mr N. Dugar, and finance and accounts by Mr P.A. Murali.

Post-acquisition of SWCL, the UB group spirits business now has 130 brands, of which 15 are millionaire brands. The group is the second largest spirits company in the world with sales of nearly 65 million cases.
