THE Premier of Western Australia, Dr Geoff Gallop, called on the Minister of Mines, Mr Sis Ram Ola, on Monday.
Dr Gallop discussed issues relating to foreign direct investment (FDI) in India by Australian companies, the mineral policies of both the countries and the challenges being faced by the mineral sector.
The two leaders agreed that after the liberalisation of the Indian mining regime, India has received a good response from Australian companies and many of them have also received reconnaissance permits in India, according to an official release.
The cooperation programmes under the framework of the Indian-Australian Joint Working Group on Energy and Minerals have been very successful in identifying specific projects.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in May this year at Perth between Western Australia and the Ministry of Mines, the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Federation of Indian Mineral Industries on `Cooperative Staff Development Related to Environmental Governance and Mine Rehabilitation' has been a major milestone.
It has been decided that a team from Western Australia would be visiting some of the mines in India where rehabilitation work has taken place.
